Margaret Littlejohn Wakefield was born on the Qualla Boundary reservation in Cherokee, North Carolina in 1960. Her father encouraged her from a young age. “I remember taking my first oils and painting my arms, hands and face a deep, dark brown so I could look like my father. Sometimes I still get the urge to do it all over again. “I didn’t really start taking a serious interest in painting until about 12 years ago. I’m still searching for my style and one day I’ll find it. Until then I’ll just enjoy painting what I want to the way I want to.” Margaret has gone to the Red Earth American Indian Cultural Festival, the second largest Native American Art Show in the nation, where she sold out; and she has won several awards in her area. “After Red Earth I quit painting, trying to come to terms with the death of my father. I’ve painted off and on over the years but have only recently started painting every day. I plan on attending as many festivals as I can where I can get my name out there. I realize that I have a long road ahead but I’m heading down it.” Margaret is a member of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation and currently lives in her late father’s residence. She has a studio there and everyone is welcome to come by. |
